There’s so much to do in Kuala Lumpur no matter what kind of traveller you are – the foodaholic, the YOLO thrill seeker, or that person who has to check every museum and art gallery off her checklist. If you’re looking for something a little less ordinary to do in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, then read on ‘cos this list is just for you!
Waterfall abseiling at Sungai Pisang
Located just 30 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur city centre, the Sungai Pisang waterfalls – or Banana River Falls, which let’s be honest is more fun to say – is a gorgeous waterfall whose stock photos don’t do it justice. Sure, it’s not easy to roll out of your 5-star bed at the crack of dawn, but we recommend you visit early when the morning rays of sunlight break through the trees and shimmer off the waters.
The waterfall abseiling standard package starts at RM45 per person if you go in a large group, and includes unlimited abseiling, trekking, instructor and crew support, equipment rental, and safety measures. If you’re looking for a day’s worth of outdoor activities in KL, you can also add on for the BBQ package because food makes everything better!
Join a local activity group via Facebook
You may have already heard of Bukit Gasing or Broga or Bukit Tabur or even FRIM, but joining a local group that knows the ins and outs of the trail can enrich your trekking experience – you can discover lesser known trails, get a helping hand on a difficult climb, or just make new friends. Many of these groups meet over Saturdays or Sundays so be sure to keep your weekends for the great outdoors in KL!
There are a number of active hiking groups in Kuala Lumpur including Happy Hikers and The Kuala Lumpur Hiking and Trail Running Meetup Group that organise regular weekly meetups of varying intensities. If hiking is not your cup of tea, there’s also cycling or running. Or if you would like a cup of tea with your activity, opt for a different type of adventure with the KL Book Appreciation Club which holds book club discussions on a weekly basis as well.
Bubble Arena
Bubble Arena’s tagline – ‘BOUNCING. BUMPING. HITTING. BANGING. THEM BALLS’ – certainly sets the stage for what’s sure to be a wild round of games. Zorbing involves rolling around in a giant, inflatable plastic orb, but bubble sports takes it one step further: you’ll still be inside an orb but the bouncing, bumping, and hitting comes into play with your options of bubble rugby, bubble football, and tower defense which involves ‘2 kings at war.’
Intrigued? Bubble Arena is located in the same place as Arena 51 Archery Tag in Petaling Jaya, so there’s twice the opportunity for fun.
Jump Street Asia
While you’re in Petaling Jaya, be sure to check out Jump Street Asia. It’s a giant indoor trampoline park – need we say more? The Main Court, which is basically 9,000 square feet of interconnected trampolines provides hours and hours of fun but you can also dive into the Foam Pit, bounce off The Wall, toss some hoops in Slam Dunk, jump onto the Big Airbag, or – our favourite – play an intense game of Dodgeball.
Instructors are available to guide you through the different intensity levels and jumping methods – hey, if you’re adventurous enough, they might just let you into the High Performance area where Olympic-spec trampolines await.
Dialogue in the Dark
Dialogue in the Dark Malaysia
Not all adventures are physical – case in point, Dialogue in the Dark, a sensory experience where visitors are led in groups by blind guides through specially constructed rooms where ‘scent, sound, wind, temperature and texture convey the characteristics of daily environments – for example a park, a city, a boat cruise or a bar.’
Dialogue in the Dark offers a reversal of experiences, with you led by the blind guides who are your source of security in a visionless world. Founded by Malaysian Stevens Chan, who is visually impaired, Dialogue in the Dark has been experienced by more than 10 million people in more than 130 cities worldwide.
Join an open mic session
Man speaking at Crackhouse Comedy Club Kuala Lumpur
This is probably the most adventurous activity on this list, at least so far. Whether you love the arts or overcoming childhood fears, KL has a fair share of open mic nights held throughout the week where you can put your inner Ariana Grande or Kevin Hart to the test.
If Walls Could Talk is a poetry open mic session that is held every 2nd Thursday of the month at The Gaslight KL. Like any open mic night, there are good, great, and not so great readings but it’s a welcoming platform for those entering the scene.
For music lovers, Merdekarya has open mic slots available throughout the year. It’s a frequent haunt for upcoming indie bands, so you’re in for some lively tunes, localised drinks, and scrumptious Indian fusion bar snacks.
Looking for laughs? Get the crowd roaring (hopefully) at the comedy open mic night at Crackhouse Comedy Club held every Wednesday night. If you’re not ready to step into the spotlight, look out for Improv Night so you can at least take some tippy toes in.
Enter a food challenge
So you’re not big on exercise, whether physical or mental. Join a food challenge instead! It’s just as Instagram-able, and most places reward you with a free meal if you’re able to complete the challenge within the stipulated time.
Take your pick at Euro Deli – should you go with the 12-inch wiener speed eating content or can you finish the giant Matterhorn burger in 45 minutes? If it’s spice you crave, the On Fire Challenge at The Street Café lives up to its name. Finish the huge pot of spicy Korean ramyun in less than eight minutes and earn yourself a lifetime free drinks membership, among other things.
If that’s not hot enough, Mikey’s Original New York Pizza offers a prized spot on its Wall of Fame to anyone who can finish its ‘spiciest pizza in Asia’ with Thai chilis, cayenne pepper, chopped habaneros, and ghost pepper powder within 40 minutes.
Try the world’s spiciest Pan Mee
Try the World’s Spiciest Pan Mee Noodle
Spiciest in just Asia though? We say go big or go home – Shi Fu Wan Tan Mee in Taman Segar claims to offer the World’s No. 1 Spiciest Pan Mee. That’s right. In fact, it’s so sure of its claim that there’s a standee proclaiming this fact on every single table in the eatery.
Of course, you can opt for the second spiciest level if you’re afraid of searing your taste buds off. It’s called Hell’s Fire. Hey, you can always sweat it out under your high-pressured Power Shower back at the hotel later!
